Natural Alternatives For Diabetes Management

Cinnamon

During the early stages of testing a new chromium supplement, Agricultural Research Service chemist Richard A. Anderson, Ph.D. and his colleagues were attempting to disrupt some volunteers? blood sugar control by feeding them a low chromium diet that included apple pie.

Surprisingly, these volunteers? blood sugar remained under control. Subsequent test-tube studies showed that cinnamon in the pie was boosting insulin activity, as chromium does, and thus controlling blood glucose. The spice turned out to be the ?best thing we ever tested? for that purpose, Anderson says. (Science News Online 1/5/2004; Vol. 165, No. 18).

Since then Dr. Anderson and colleagues have confirmed the blood sugar lowering properties of cinnamon and its ability to lower triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol in test tube and animal studies as well as in a number of human trials. Details of these studies and human trials are outside the scope of this article.

Richard A. Anderson said: ?If you can improve insulin function the cholesterol goes down, triglycerides go down, glucose goes down, and all this goes towards the alleviation of type 2 diabetes,? He cautioned, however, that consumers should not simply start dousing their food with cloves and cinnamon [at high doses]. He noted, for example, that cinnamon in powder form is rendered ineffective by contact with saliva, and its lack of solubility in water can result in an unwanted build up of the spice in the body. (HealthDay News 5/4/06).

There are some simple ways around this including buying cinnamon capsules.

Cloves

Dr. Alam Khan, Agricultural University, Peshawar, Pakistan, a former postdoctoral student and Fulbright Fellow in the Anderson laboratory, reported on the first study of the effect of cloves on insulin function in humans at the Experimental Biology 2006 meeting, in San Francisco. (Medical News Today 9/4/2006).

At the end of the study, regardless of the amount of cloves consumed, all those who ingested cloves showed a drop in glucose, triglycerides and LDL (?bad?) cholesterol levels. Blood levels of HDL (?good?) cholesterol were not affected among the clove eaters. Those who did not ingest cloves experienced no changes. (HealthDay News 5/4/2006). More details of this study can be found at the author?s website.

Gymnema

Studies show that Gymnema sylvestre helps control both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Gymnema is a well-proven treatment for diabetes, and it has been used for this purpose for over 2,000 years and has proved to be very effective in type 1 diabetes.

It is best known for its apparent ability to lower blood sugar levels. Results from case reports and studies in humans and animals suggest that it may work in several ways to help control both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It is possible that gymnema sylvestre may even prompt the pancreas to develop more beta cells - the source of insulin. It may also make body cells more responsive to the insulin that is available. (DrugDigest).

The first scientific confirmation of the effects of gymnema on glucose in human diabetics was in 1926 when it was demonstrated that the leaves of Gymnema reduced urinary glucose. (K.G. Gharpurey, Indian Medical Gazette 1926; 61: 155).

A number of trials have been carried out demonstrating the properties of Gymnema sylvestre, the details of which are beyond the scope of this article.

Chromiun

Scientists believe that insulin uses chromium as an assistant (technically, a cofactor) to ?unlock the door? to the cell membrane, thereby allowing glucose to enter the cell.

More than 15 scientific studies support the safety and role of chromium in improving insulin function and glucose metabolism in people with type 2 diabetes and related conditions. ?There is strong scientific evidence to suggest that supplemental chromium picolinate may improve insulin sensitivity, blood glucose control, and cardiovascular risk factors in adults with type 2 diabetes,? according to Dr. Kaufman, former president of the American Diabetes Association and specialist in pediatric endocrinology. (PRNewswire-FirstCall 15/2/2005). Details of these studies are outside the scope of this article.

Science News Online reported in April 2005 that Robert DiSilvestro and Emily Dy of Ohio State University showed data at the Experimental Biology 2005 meeting in San Diego indicating that only the picolinate form of chromium is absorbed well by the body. The report stated that according to Robert DiSilvestro about 40 percent of chromium picolinate was absorbed by people taking chromium supplements in one experiment. DiSilvestro added that absorption of other forms of the mineral in supplements ran as low as 1 percent and only about 10 percent of any form of chromium in foods is typically absorbed. (Science News Online 16/4/2005; Vol. 167, No. 16).

Additionally, an animal study conducted at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that chromium picolinate was better absorbed by the tissues (e.g., liver and muscle) than chromium nicotinate and chromium chloride. Absorption into the tissue is important because for a mineral to be beneficial, it must survive the digestive tract and reach the bloodstream. Otherwise, minerals pass through the body, leaving it void of necessary nutrients. (Medical News Today 7/2/2007).

Meal Planning For Diabetics

If you live with diabetes it is important to carefully plan all of your meals. Good meal planning is important for those who need to carefully manage their diabetes, and finding the right information and tools can help you do it.

Rather than just preparing any old meal and hoping that it fits easily into your diet, careful meal planning can ensure that your cholesterol levels and blood sugar levels are low. It is a great way to make sure that your blood pressure is at an acceptable level and it can help you to keep your weight under control. If you live with diabetes you know that good meal planning really can help you to just feel better all around in all aspects of your life and your lifestyle.

Many people make the mistake of thinking that good meal planning is about amounts; amounts of protein, carbohydrates, and certain vitamins and minerals in the body. Many people choose to supplement their diets with vitamins as the primary method of ensuring that levels are adequate; meal planning can help you to get your vitamins and minerals and other requirements the right way, through food and not pills.

Meal planning software is perfect for making sure that all levels are correct, because they can determine exactly what the specific vitamin and mineral needs are for the members of your family, especially those who have diabetes. Some meal planning software is web based, so you can access your software from anywhere in the world without having to worry about breaking discs and out of date information. When reviewing meal planning software ensure that its food database compares and checks all information against the United States Department of Agriculture Food Nutrient Database, or other non-biased, reputable source.

Another check to make is that the meal planner builds dietary guidelines into its program logic. Good meal planning software is able to determine what you might need as far as your dietary needs by doing just that. You don’t have to go visit a nutritionist; meal planning software can be enough. That way, you know exactly what you are looking for in a nutritious meal and what you need.

If you are dealing with diabetes, meal planning software can help keep you healthy in many ways.

First of all, you don’t have to wonder about the proper nutrients and vitamins and sugar levels; no more having to guess and figure things out as far as your meals go, so you can feel better about every bite of food you put into your mouth.

Keep a journal of the things that you have eaten, and take responsibility for the things that you put into your mouth. Proper meal planning software can help you keep a record of what you have eaten, and then test your blood sugar to see how the meal you have eaten and recorded has impacted your blood sugar.

As you see what does and does not work to get your levels under control, you will be better at immediately recognizing what is and is not good for you. Meal planning software can help you to understand what things fit into your diet, so you might even be able to modify some of your current meal plans to fit your diabetes diet a bit better.

When you are planning your meals, your meal planning software can tell you just how much of everything to use in your meal and it can help you to keep track of (literally) all of the things that you have eaten and will eat for the next day, week, or even month. You can save money at the grocery store by having a pre planned list set, so you know exactly where to go and what to buy. No more buying unnecessary groceries or junk food, and things that will not get eaten, so this saves you not only money but time as well.

Natural Cures For Diabetes ? Safe Way To Control Diabetes

Most physicians will tell you there is no cure for diabetes. However, some people believe there are natural cures for diabetes. Diabetes is a disease in which the pancreas does not produce the needed amount of insulin.

Insulin is a hormone that naturally turns sugars into energy in your body. Without the production of insulin, your body is not able to turn sugars into the energy that your body needs and these sugars stay in your blood, which makes your kidneys have to work harder than normal. The sugars are then washed from your body in your urine. One of the most common symptoms of diabetes is frequent urination. Over time, if left untreated, diabetes can put you at a higher risk for disease such as heart disease and stroke. It is important for you to learn to control your diabetes. Many diabetes natural cures can be added to a healthy diet and can help you to control the symptoms of diabetes. Although, many people feel the diabetes has been cured, the changes in your diet must be followed throughout your life in order to prevent the onset of diabetes symptoms.

Healthy Diet in Diabetes The most important diabetes natural cure is a change in lifestyle. You should begin eating a healthy diet as early in life as possible. This can help you to prevent many illnesses and diseases that are caused by poor diet. Diabetes is one of these diseases. The most important aspect of your healthy diet is learning to eat a variety of foods and eating the correct portions. It is also important to eat your meals on a regular schedule – rather than 1-2 large meals per day, eat 4 small meals. This helps you to better control your portion sizes and helps your body to produce the needed energy. Here are some ways diet can help you prevent or decrease the symptoms of diabetes:

  • Whole-grain – eating whole-grain foods such as wheat breads, wheat rice, and wheat pasta help you to decrease the amount of carbohydrates in your diet. (Carbohydrates turn to sugar in your body.)
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables – any healthy diet should include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids – eating foods such as cold-water fish that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids helps to provide your body with “good” fats.
  • Carbohydrates – carbohydrates are needed to help your body produce energy. But if your body is not producing insulin correctly, you will need to decrease the amounts of carbohydrates in your diet.
  • Sweets – desserts with a high content of sugar should be limited or eliminated from your diet. You can get natural sugars by eating fresh fruits.
  • Alcohol – alcohol consumption should be decreased or avoided.

Diabetes Natural Cures Many physicians will prescribe medications to help you control the symptoms of diabetes. Before you begin a treatment with medication, you should discuss with your physician the side effects of the medication, as well as any interactions with other drugs or food. For those who do not wish to risk the side effects of medication, there are some popular diabetes natural cures:

  • Ginseng – has been shown to help control blood sugar levels
  • Chromium – helps the body’s cells properly respond to insulin
  • Magnesium – can help regulate blood sugar levels. Magnesium can be found naturally in foods such as green leafy vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Low magnesium levels can worsen the symptoms of diabetes.
  • Cinnamon – can help to control blood glucose levels.
  • Zinc – helps in the production and storage of insulin. Zinc can be found naturally in foods such as oysters, ginger root, pecans, egg yolk, beef liver, sardines, almonds, and chicken.
  • Bitter melon – helps to increase the number of beta cells, the cells that produce insulin.
  • Indian Kino – this herb helps to regenerate beta cells
  • Gymnema Sylvestre – helps the pancreas to produce insulin and help insulin to lower blood sugar levels
  • Indian Gooseberry – helps to stimulate the pancreas causing the pancreas to produce more insulin

These are some of the many diabetes natural cures that have been shown to be effective in preventing and controlling the symptoms of diabetes. The most effective cure or treatment of diabetes is eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

Neuropathy, A Diabetic Side Effect ? How To Decrease Or Eliminate This Problem.

One diabetic side effect is neuropathy. This is a condition where the nerves of the body are damaged. It is called ?Diabetic Peripheral (referring to the outer part of the body) Neuropathy?.

This type of neuropathy affects the feet and legs, hands and arms, and it can occur on both sides of the body. In fact, 40 percent of type 2 diabetics experience Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy.

Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy shows up as one or more of the following symptoms:|

* Tingling or numbness in the fingers, toes or legs.
* Feeling cold, burning or pain in the hands, feet or legs.
* Extreme sensitivity to touch, even a light touch.
* Sharp pains or cramps.
* Loss of balance and coordination.

These symptoms are often worse at night.

Higher than normal sugar levels in the body cause the outer sheathing (protective covering) of nerve cells to degenerate. This is similar to an electrical wire that is covered with insulation, and the insulation is beginning to crumble. Without insulation the unprotected wire will start short-circuiting.

In the same way, when the sheathing of nerve cells degenerate, the signals being transmitted are scrambled, resulting in your body receiving signals that are interpreted as numbness, heat, cold, tingling, pain, etc.

It has been known for some time that increased levels of Tiamine (vitamin B1) in the blood stream are very effective in reducing and reversing diabetic neuropathy. Unfortunately, the oral intake of vitamin B1 does not greatly increase the levels of B1 in the blood stream. Previously, the way that blood stream levels of B1 were increased was through periodic intravenous feeding or through injections every few weeks.

The reason that methods like this had to be used is that Tiamine (sometimes spelled Thiamine), like all of the B vitamins, is water-soluble. It cannot be stored in the body and flushes out within 4 to 5 hours. Oral intake of Tiamine over 5 mg results in greatly reduced bioavailability and immediate flushing from the body (this is why urine frequently turns yellow when taking larger doses of B vitamins).

Now, a new type of vitamin B1 has been produced, called Benfotiamine. It is a fat-soluble version of vitamin B1. What this means is that this new form of vitamin B1 can be taken orally in large dosages and it will not flush out of the body the way ordinary Tiamine (vitamin B1) does.

The result is that the blood stream levels of vitamin B1 can now be greatly increased, enabling a rapid and effective decrease or elimination of the symptoms of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy.

Many of our diabetics now using Benfotiamine report a lessening of their neuropathy symptoms within 4 to 7 days, and Benfotiamine has been shown to be non-toxic and without any side effects even in very high dosages.

You can start using Benfotiamine and decrease or eliminate these problems!

Pre-diabetes: ‘check Engine’ Warning Light

Your car has an early detection system and so does your body. Take 3 minutes to read this article and learn how you can save yourself a life time of aches, pains, and costly medical bills.

Have you ever had the “Check Engine” warning light come on in your car? Most newer cars have a system that monitors the performance of your car. If something is not working properly, the “Check Engine” light usually comes on.

The good news is that this “pre-warning” system can help you avoid costly damage, which may be occurring with your vehicle, by detecting small problems before they become big problems. However, the only way to be certain is to have your car inspected by an expert mechanic when the “Check Engine” light comes on.

Did you know that your body has a “pre-warning” system?

With many diseases, your body will start producing symptoms such as aches, pains, fatigue, frequent thirst, and so on. These symptoms are your body’s “Check Engine” light, warning you about problems.

However, with diabetes, pre-warning signs don’t always show up so easily. The medical community is calling it: Pre-Diabetes.
Today, roughly 41 million Americans have pre-diabetes which left undetected and untreated, progresses into full-blown diabetes.
The challenge with pre-diabetes is the fact that the condition doesn’t like to reveal itself with noticeable symptoms. Because there are few, if any symptoms, most people will not bother having screening tests performed. With pre-diabetes, noticeable symptoms like frequent thirst and urination may not occur until the disease has progressed and is already causing considerable damage to your body. Most Type 2 diabetics don’t have symptoms because the onset of diabetes is so slow.

Don’t wait for your “Check Engine” light to come on. Have your blood tested. Call your doctor today and make the appointment.
The goal with identifying pre-diabetes is to prevent the onset of diabetes from ever happening.

Your physician can determine if you have pre-diabetes with two common tests. The fasting plasma glucose test (FPG) and the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Both require an overnight fast.

The good news is that you can greatly improve your odds and likely prevent diabetes with early detection and proper care.
Don’t wait ’til it hurts. Ask your doctor about diabetes and have your blood sugar checked several times a year.

Nursing Your Baby When You Are A Diabetic

If you are a diabetic mother nursing your child then I am certain you have already talked with your doctor. There are different things you need to know about your diabetes and how it affects the baby and how nursing can help you keep your blood sugar down to a more normal level.

By nursing your infant for at least the first six months, you are helping in decreasing their chances of getting type 1 diabetes. Breastfeeding may reduce the baby?s risk of developing diabetes later in life. The protective effect seems strongest with at least 4 months of exclusive breastfeeding. Breast feeding is not only great for your baby but it is also good for the mothers health. It can and will help the new mother shed some of that baby weight that she gained throughout her pregnancy. Another great thing is that with some diabetic nursing mothers, their glucose levels actually tend to go down when nursing and in some cases some of the diabetic symptoms may even go away while she is nursing her new baby.

With type 1 diabetes you do not have to worry at all about the possibilities of your insulin entering your baby. Insulin is compatible with breastfeeding. The molecules in it are too large to pass into breast milk. If you need to take oral medicine for diabetes, your doctor can prescribe one that can be taken while breastfeeding. You might even find that your need for more insulin has significantly decreased since pregnancy.

Breastfeeding means that you have to be extra careful of your nutrition, so be sure to see your doctor or dietitian to create a meal plan that will work for you. It is important to eat regular snacks when you are breastfeeding because you want to keep your blood glucose levels constant. You will need to increase your caloric intake by about 500 calories a day to meet your baby?s nutritional needs. You can do this simply by drinking a glass of milk each time you breastfeed, which will keep you both hydrated and full of vitamins.

In order to maintain a balanced diet, experts suggest that mothers eat 20 from carbohydrates, and 30-40% from fruits and vegetables. Keeping up with all of these food groups will ensure that your body has the nutrients to provide for the baby. By eating a healthy diet full of legumes, whole grains, other healthy foods, you will be able to keep low blood sugar at bay.

When a new mom is nursing her child and she is diabetic then chances are her blood sugar levels will get off balance more often than not. Eating a proper healthy diet and getting regular exercise and, of course, keeping track of your glucose levels, will all play a big part in keeping you and your baby healthy. Diabetics can breastfeed and gain even more benefits than the emotional closeness, such as lowered diabetes risk for the baby, and improved diabetes control for the mother.

Natural Diabetes Cures - Easy Way To Treat

Any successful method for treatment of diabetes should aim at removal of the actual cause of the disease and building up of the whole health-level of the patient.

Diet plays a vital role in such a treatment. The primary dietary consideration for a diabetes patient is that he should be a strict lacto-vegetarian and take a low-calorie, low-fat, alkaline diet of high quality natural foods. Fruits, nuts and vegetables, whole meal bread and dairy products form a good diet of the diabetic. These foods should be eaten in as dry a condition as possible to ensure thorough ensalivation during the first part of the process of digestion.

Cooked starchy foods should be avoided as in the process of cooking the cellulose envelopes of the starch granules burst and consequently, the starch is far too easily absorbed in the system. The excess absorbed has to be got rid of by the kidneys and appears as sugar in the urine. With raw starchy foods, however, the saliva and digestive juices in the small intestine regulate the quantities required to be changed into sugar for the body’s needs. The unused and undigested portion of raw starchy foods does not become injurious to the system, as it does not readily ferment.

The diabetic should not be afraid to eat fresh fruits and vegetables which contain sugar and starch. Fresh fruits contain sugar fructose, which does not need insulin for its metabolism and is well tolerated by diabetics. Fats and oils should be taken sparingly, for they are apt to lower the tolerance for proteins and starches. Emphasis should be on raw foods as they stimulate and increase insulin production. For protein, homemade cottage cheese, various forms of soured milk and nuts are best. The patient should avoid tea, coffee, cocoa, white flour, sugar and all the products from them, tinned fruits, refined cereals and alcoholic drinks. He should also avoid overeating and take four or five small meals a day rather than three large ones.

Among the several home remedies that have proved beneficial in controlling diabetes, perhaps the most important is the use of bitter gourd Recent research by a team of British doctors have established that bitter gourd contains a hypoglycaemic or insulin-like principle, designated as. ‘plantinsulin’, which has been found valuable in lowering the blood and urine sugar levels. It should, therefore, be included liberally in the diet of the diabetic. For better results, the diabetic should take the juice of about four or five fruits every morning on an empty stomach. The seeds of bitter gourd can be added to food in a powdered form. Diabetics can also use bitter gourd in the form of decoction by boiling the pieces in water or in the form of dry powder.

The tender leaves of the mango tree are considered useful in diabetes. An infusion is prepared from fresh leaves by soaking them overnight and squeezing them well in water in the morning. This filtrate should be taken every morning to control early diabetes. In the alternative, the leaves should be dried in the shade, powdered and preserved for use when necessary. Half a teaspoon of this powder should be taken twice a day.

Besides bitter gourd, certain other vegetables have been found useful in diabetes. These include string beans, cucumbers, onion and garlic. String bean pod tea is an excellent natural substitute for insulin and valuable .in diabetes. Cucumbers contain a hormone needed by the cells of the pancreas for producing insulin. Onions and garlic have proved beneficial in reducing blood sugar in diabetes.

The diabetic patient should eliminate minor worries from his daily life. He must endeavor to be more easy-going and should not get unduly worked up by the stress and strain of life.

New Options Available For People With Diabetes Feeling Left Out At The Breakfast Table

According to a new online survey, people with diabetes may experience ‘breakfast envy,’ (feeling left out and envious) when they see friends and family eating traditional breakfast foods-like sweetened cereals and pastries.

These are foods they’d like to eat, but know they are not ideal choices for people with diabetes.

The recent national online survey of 505 people with type 2 diabetes found that more than eight in ten (83%) reported feelings of breakfast envy, and 80 percent want more variety of diabetes-friendly breakfast options. Surprisingly, 49 percent admitted to eating something for breakfast they knew would spike their blood sugar because they simply wanted their favorite breakfast food.

Missing breakfast altogether is not the solution. Other research shows that people who skip breakfast have a 4.5 times greater risk for obesity. According to the Glucerna Breakfast Survey, missing breakfast can also have consequences beyond being hungry:

• 58 percent of people reported having less energy

• 42 percent eat more during the rest of the day

• 38 percent experience drops in their blood sugar level when medication is taken on an empty stomach and 34 percent become cranky.

“With the early morning havoc of getting ready for work or school, preparing and eating breakfast can sometimes be a challenge, but skipping breakfast can have negative effects on blood sugar and energy levels,” said Robyn Webb, MS, LN, nutritionist, chef, and author of more than 10 healthy and diabetes-related cookbooks. “But it is possible to have a balanced breakfast with a minimal amount of planning. Now there is a new Glucerna Cereal, created specifically for people with diabetes that’s both convenient and great tasting.”

The new Glucerna Cereal is clinically shown to help minimize blood sugar spikes better than a leading corn flake cereal and contains a trace mineral, chromium picolinate, that helps the body’s own insulin work more efficiently.

Glucerna products are for use under medical supervision as part of a diabetes management plan.

Natural Diabetic Diet

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that occurs when the beta cells of the pancreas are unable to produce an adequate amount of insulin to prevent hyperglycemia.

Type 1 diabetes is usually caused by autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic beta cells that produce insulin. There is no known preventative measure that can be used against type 1 diabetes, as most people affected are otherwise healthy when onset occurs. Diet and exercise cannot reverse or prevent this type of diabetes. While this type of diabetes can affect both children and adults, it has a nickname of ?juvenile diabetes? because the majority of its cases are found in children. Type 2 is a tissue-wide insulin resistance that occurs due to a combination of defective insulin secretion and insulin resistance. It is usually first treated by attempts to change physical activity, diet, and weight loss. These measures can restore insulin sensitivity, allowing type 2 diabetics to regain satisfactory glucose control for years. Both type 1 and 2 are incurable chronic conditions. However, they have been treatable ever since insulin became medically available and are usually managed today with a combination of dietary treatment, tablets, and insulin supplementation. Diabetes causes many complications in its victims. Acute complications may occur if the disease is not looked over and controlled sufficiently enough. Serious long-term complications including cardiovascular disease, chronic renal failure, retinal damage, nerve damage, and micro vascular damage, which may cause erectile dysfunction and poor healing, are often a result of inadequate treatment of this disease. However, adequate treatment of diabetes, along with an increased watch on blood pressure control and lifestyle factors, may improve the risk profile of the above mentioned complications.

Many diabetics have trouble controlling their blood sugar. Even those who exercise regularly are still confused about what and how much they should be eating. The longer you deal with diabetes, the easier it will become for you to manage the disease. Although regulating your blood sugar can be complicated, it is not impossible. There are many variables that affect blood sugar, including mood, stress, infection, illness, and sleep disturbances. Because blood sugar regulation isn?t an exact science, you should meet with your doctor or dietician regularly to plan a diet customized especially for you. Be sure to ask them questions, let them know your habits, and check in with your doctor to let him or her know your progress along with any problems you may be encountering. It is a good idea to keep a food journal in which you document the kinds of foods you eat along with the serving sizes and your after-meal blood sugar levels plus any other helpful information your doctor may need. Make sure to be specific because the more information you give your doctor and the better they will be at helping you. Visiting with an herbalist or alternative care doctor could be a good idea too. They will be able to tell you with vitamins, minerals, herbal supplements, and alternative treatments that may help alleviate your symptoms. There are numerous cookbooks that give guidelines on serving sizes for diabetics. There are also a lot of new computer programs that help diabetics plan their diets and calculate the amount of food to eat. If you are able to access the internet, there are also many sites online which can help diabetics including diabetes.org, diabetes.com, diabetes-net.com, diabetic-lifestyle.com, diabeticdiet.net, and diabeticgourmet.com.
